3. Names that are roleplay and apparently have some further meaning with the user.
I usually go with #3 and use a combination of Google/babelfish and www.20000-names.com to make mine.
In your case, I'd look up "shadow" in other languages, see what you like, then pick a first name from 20k names that matches the feel. You might be pleased with the results.
Here's an example:
Shadow in Portugese is "sombra"
A decent boy's name in Portugese is Justino (meaning upright; righteous - perfect for a R/Mo).
Justino Sombra
Don't like it? Rinse, repeat. At least it will be unique.

There are also joke names, my characters all have the word "Teh" in them, a common misspell of the in internet. It's just an inside joke, though I also have used serious/roleplaying names. One of my Guildmates even mimiced one of my names and one of my quotes from Teamspeak to create "Teh Pain Train" character.
Not all non-serious names are meant to be 1337 or deragitory/plagorized (if you can apply plagorism here)

Me too, my monk Oskar De Deus is an amalgamation of the names of two famous healers (can't remember what their full names were now) and almost every time I play someone will either ask if I'm from Holland or talk to me in Dutch. Thankfully everyone who has done this has been a) very nice about it and b) could speak English aswell. Its always nice to speak to people from your own country though in such a diverse place as the English (European) servers.
In terms of finding a name I always find the latin names for animals useful e.g. my new ele Tobianus Carr comes from Ammodytes tobianus, the small sandeel which I have just finished my MSc research project on. Finding names that are good for you can come anywhere and any part of your life, you dont need good imagination, just use something that sounds cool to you

Thinking about names is very hard. I haven't been thinking about names for years though, I've had Maxiemonster since I was about 6 (Yep, even in Diablo 1 I had this name), and even though I think it's childish now (which it is, it's actually from a book called 'Max and the Maximonsters', which is a book ful of pictures), it's more likely tradition, and it's pretty cool to get messages like 'Hey, didn't you play Diablo 2?' (yep, happend 2 times already, damn I'm famous!).

I keep going back to latin... then pick a name which would be appropriate for the profession of the char... needless to say, calling your warrior Nex Violentus has created an interesting problem when you translate Nex as 'violent death' and Violentus as 'violent' and then realise a warrior doesn't exactly do that much damage....
But yeah, for names, latin is great because no-one actually speaks it

I wasn't serious about the Legolas thing...
And I just found out there already is someone with the name "Mimi"... And I thought I was original... And yet Mimi is the best name ever! To bad there is no cat race... Well I'll just go play WoW then .
Back on topic: Don't take latin words. I hate Latin. It's sooo boring. Use ancient Greece (spelling). It sounds better and noone speaks that to.
